EWKR Dojo Rules

Dojo Rules and Etiquette

Traditional wado-kai karate follows specific rules and etiquette. These long-standing traditions help to keep the karate training environment safe, respectful, and focused.

Karate etiquette focuses on respect for other people, this includes bowing to show courtesy. Dojo rules focus on safety and making sure the class runs smoothly and safely for everyone.

The following are the general rules for all England Wado Kai Karate Association (EWKR) Dojos. Some individual EWKR karate clubs may have a few extra rules for safety in their specific training venue.

General EWKR Dojo Rules

  • • Students must bow when entering and leaving the karate Dojo.
  • • Your karate suit (Gi) must be white and kept clean.
  • • Do not wear any metallic objects, such as jewellery, during karate training.
  • • Keep toenails and fingernails short and clean.
  • • No eating, drinking, smoking, chewing gum, or bad behaviour is allowed in the karate Dojo.
  • • Always show respect toward higher grades.
  • • Be kind and helpful to beginners and lower grades.
  • • When resting, karate students should sit with their backs straight and legs crossed.
  • • To obtain Mon or Kyu grades, karate students must train regularly.
  • • The karate instructor must always be addressed as Sensei.

Training Safely and Respectfully

These Dojo rules create the right atmosphere for learning and practising Wado-Kai karate as a traditional martial art. Your commitment to these Dojo rules helps everyone get the most from their training.

Safety is our main concern for all students, from the youngest beginner to the most experienced black belt. Showing respect to your Sensei and fellow students makes the karate Dojo a positive place for everyone.
